Disappearing Ink
Tattoo Removal

Why choose our tattoo removal?

In 2012, Disappearing Ink brought tattoo removal to the Lancaster County area, attracting customers from not just PA, but Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.  We've utilized the advanced Q‑switched laser technology from Quanta, with its 3 varying wavelengths that enable treatment of every color. Our powerful laser targets tattoo pigment with minimal injury to the surrounding skin. Whether you want complete removal or to simply lighten what you have for a cover‑up, we will customize each treatment to maximize the benefits for your particular situation.

  • Safe for most all skin types. Darker skin requires a more conservative approach, so as to avoid hyper or hypo pigmentation issues. When colors are involved, the skin’s integrity has a higher risk of being compromised.
  • Effective on stubborn ink. We offer very specific after care instructions to help you get the most out of your treatments. Reds, blues, greens, and pinks can be extremely challenging.
  • Experience with micro-bladed and permanent cosmetics removal. We are your go-to for the first step in brow corrections.  A few removal sessions, in most cases, will better prepare the skin for your new, recolored brows.
  • Scar resurfacing. For tattoos that require resurfacing, perhaps due to scarring from the initial tattoo application, or over-zealous treatments from previous providers, we have the UltraClear cold fiber resurfacing laser to help break down that tissue, allowing your skin to look as smooth and normal as possible. We almost always mix in resurfacing treatments, as needed, with your removal treatment plan — something no one else can do.
  • Advanced ink clearance. We are the only practice in the area to utilize Merz’s DeScribe patch.  It is a medical- grade silicone patch that enables multiple laser passes in one session, enhancing effectiveness. Ask your technician for more details!

How does it work?

  • Tattoo ink sits deep within the dermis. Our laser uses ultra-short, high-intensity light pulses to break the ink into tiny particles, allowing your body to naturally flush them out via your lymph system. Over a series of 6+ sessions, you will notice the tattoo gradually fade with each visit.

  • When the laser breaks down pigment, the ink is absorbed into the skin versus being “pulled out” of the skin.  This is why tattoo removal does not cause scarring. In rare cases, over-treatment can occur, which is why carefully following aftercare instructions is essential.

What can I expect?

  • A quick, snapping sound combined with a heat sensation similar to bacon grease splatter (yikes!) is felt as the laser’s energy is absorbed by the ink particles, and they subsequently explode. Don’t fret though, A Zimmer chiller is used during the treatment to combat the heat accumulation.

  • Redness and swelling lasting for several hours to a few days.  Occasional blistering, particularly when dealing with colored ink.

  • Light frosting, a temporary whitening, is caused by the gases that result from the exploding ink particles.  This look lasts for about 10-20 minutes.(Beware of the videos online that make you think the tattoo magically disappears after one treatment!)

  • Once those gases dissipate, the color is again revealed, and will often appear darker due to the underlying irritation.  This can make the ink look purplish in color.

  • Gradual fading  can take place for up to 9 months following a single treatment. Sessions are typically spaced 8–12 weeks or longer apart,  to allow for more ink clearance.

  • Tattoos with densely packed ink, bright colors, large size, or professional application, will always require additional sessions compared to lighter amateur or “stick and poke” applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does it hurt?

Although tattoo removal is a fairly quick process, it feels nothing like getting a tattoo. The sensation is intense heat. A Zimmer cooling device is always used to reduce discomfort. You can apply a topical anesthetic 45 minutes before your appointment to take the edge off the intensity of the heat, but understand that it won’t render the area completely numb.

  • Will the tattoo disappear completely?

Many tattoos fade entirely, while some may leave a faint "ghost image." Sometimes, certain inks can be very unpredictable, making a complete removal almost impossible. Most will do fine, but we always like every customer to maintain realistic expectations. We’ll give you an honest assessment before starting.

Remember, we also can offer the benefits of our UltraClear cold fiber laser to our customers, that can give stubborn tattoos the extra kick in the pants they may need!

  • How should I care for the area after my treatment?

Keep the area clean, avoid sun exposure, and apply recommended ointments to support healing and prevent scarring. An in-depth after care sheet will be texted to you beforehand to review.  You can then be better prepared to have the proper products.

  • How many sessions will I need?

Most tattoos require a minimum of 6 sessions. There are many variables that ultimately determine  that number, like age of the tattoo, placement, ink color(s), skills of your artist, health of the customer, and care taken after a treatment.

  • How much does it cost?

There is a minimum charge for up to 2 sq. inch is $100 per session. Text 717-572-2009 with pictures and dimensions for an estimate, or to make an appointment for an in-person consultation!
